Artist Statement

My submission is a redesign of the Brooklyn Bridge in the Art Deco Style. For my submission, I was inspired by artists like A.M. Cassandre, Sonia Delaunay, and the architecture of buildings such as the Chrysler Building and Niagara Mohawk Building. I incorporated many angular and round shapes in my design to reflect the symmetrical nature of the Art Deco style. The color palette consists of black, teal/blue, orange, white, brown, and gold. At the time Art Deco was in its prime, it was known to represent luxury, glamor, and modernism. I tried to convey this using the colors that I chose, which are common colors used for Art Deco designs. Despite at its peak representing progress and the future, many city structures today use less of these bright, luxurious designs and instead opt for a simplistic, clean, and corporate aesthetic. I chose the Brooklyn Bridge because of how iconic it is to New York’s identity. The Brooklyn Bridge was built to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn, representing progress, connection, and advancement. These themes align with the Art Deco movement, making the blend between the two more seamless. I wanted to highlight that vibrancy and elegance can still be incorporated into everyday cityscape.
