Artist Statement
Today in our postmodern era, Art Deco continues to shape how we think about architecture, especially in New York. Through my photo essay, I explore how Art Deco architecture is not just a historical style, but a timeless and impactful design philosophy that celebrates structure, detail, and innovation. “By 1930 it is estimated the number will be doubled, necessitating tiers of sidewalks, with elevated lines and new creations to supplement subway and surface cars, with bridges between the structural heights.” (Moses king, “THE COSMOPOLIS OF THE FUTURE”). This quote reinforces my essay’s theme, where these buildings were built to represent the future that people from the 20th century envisioned and in many ways they still do. The artistic aspect continues to influence the city’s identity, proving that even during our postmodern age, the New York we know now incorporates this timeless framework of Art Deco in its more modernistic detail.
