Artist Statement
In the early 20th century, Jackson Heights began to develop a new style of garden communities. Bold, ornate, geometric buildings overtook the skyline. Luxury “garden apartments” began to litter 34th avenue. Along 34th avenue, The Towers serve as a symbol of luxury, a place where our wealthiest residents live. While they improve the aesthetic beauty and diversity of our neighborhood, they have also brought gentrification, drawn in by the allure of Art Deco. A symbol of progress and prosperity: a driving force in the displacement of Jackson Heights natives. Art Deco: the embodiment of change, yet a meld of modern and classic. Our historic buildings draw inspiration from both ancient and modern architecture, respecting both the past and the present. In Jackson Heights, I hope we can learn from Art Deco, preserving the culture of our neighborhood and our natives while being open to a new golden future.
